Akeno is a girl born with a special type of blood called Rare Blood, whose parents were killed by Ayakashi. Left all alone in the world, she was saved by the words of her cousin, Takamitsu. To show her devotion, she spends her days offering her blood.

One day, amidst a relentless thunderstorm, Akeno is attacked by an Ayakashi but is rescued by a being known as the "Thunder God." Having been taught by Takamitsu that the Thunder God is a "violent demon that rules over lightning," Akeno is terrified—but the "Thunder God" is a bit different from the figure she had imagined...
